World population day

World Population Day is an annual event, observed on July 11, which seeks to raise awareness of global population issues. The event was established by the Governing Council of the United Nations Development Programme in 1989. It was inspired by the public interest in Five Billion Day on July 11, 1987, approximately the date on which the world's population reached five billion people.

The world population on the 21th anniversary of Five Billion Day, July 11, 2008, was estimated to have been 6,681,418,341 (as of now when i write this entry - from here)

Today UN calls all countries for more family planning. In a report marking World Population Day, the UN estimates that the number of people on the planet will grow from 6.7bn to 9.2bn by the year 2050. That means greater demand for food, water and fuel. Such growth is unsustainable, the UN says, as climate change degrades arable land and reduces water supplies.

The hard truth is, the UN adds, the world does not even want so many new people. More than 200 million women, many in the developing world, do not have access to contraceptives.

Where are we going? How are we going to manage this??

Google's new iGoogle - Experimental features

Today when i was using iGoogle, suddenly the presentation format got changed. I was wondering.. Then I came to know that Google is experimenting with several new features on iGoogle. Some of the features..

Left navigation

With the navigation now available on the left-hand side of the page, you can get to all your gadgets with one click. The left navigation contains a list of all your gadgets and tabs.

Canvas view gadgets

Sometimes you want to focus on a single gadget on iGoogle. Now canvas views or full page views are available for some of our most popular gadgets. You can get to the canvas view of a gadget by doing the following:

* Click its title in the left navigation.
* Click the Maximize button in the gadget titlebar.

Chat on iGoogle

Now you can chat with all your friends in iGoogle without having to download any extra software. If your friends are signed into Gmail, Google Talk, or an experimental iGoogle homepage at the same time as you, you'll see their screennames listed on the left navigation.

Unofficial Google Command line interface

Goosh.org hosted a command line interface to Google! It is like unix shell like interface. Using this you can access most of the google services (search for web, image, map (places), video, news, feeds, site specific searches and translate etc). It is pretty cool!! "help" or "ls" command gives the list of features supported. And you can clean up your webpage using clear command!! nice to see see all these without any advertisement.
